Capture and FTP
For this 50 point assignment, use View | Source (Internet Explorer) or View | Page Source (Netscape) to look at any web site's code, and save this to your hard disk.
With Internet Explorer, View | Source will open the source data in Notepad. You can then save the file from Notepad to your hard disk.
With Netscape, View | Page Source will open the source data in a Netscape window. You can use Ctrl-A to copy the contents of the window to the Windows clipboard (using Ctrl-C), and then open Notepad and paste the content (Ctrl-V). You can then save the source from Notepad to your hard disk.
Once you've got the file on your hard disk, rename it with something that can be identified as your file (for example: jsmith_ftp.htm) otherwise everyone in the class will have an index.htm file that they will upload, overwriting everyone else's files.
FTP the file to the class web site.
To upload files to an FTP site, you'll need an FTP client program, such as CuteFTP Pro2000, which is available for download here: http://www.cuteftp.com. There is an FTP site set up for this class here:
When you enter the "host address," leave off the intial "ftp" the host address is simply "209.49.12.4" and "cmsy129" is a folder on the site. Here's an example of the screen set up for cuteFTP, another popular ftp client available from www.cuteftp.com:
If you are unable to resolve an FTP client on your computer, you can use the FTP client in the computer lab on campus. Remember to bring your files with you on a diskette!
Once you have uploaded the file, email me to let me know you have done so, and let me know the name of the file you've uploaded.
Email me: if you have questions about this assignment
