CMSY129 Principles of the Internet
How This Class Works

This is an online class about the internet, on the internet.

It's a three-credit course at Howard Community College, and the Intersession section runs for five weeks. This is how we take this class:

  1. All the reading material is online. The only way to learn about the internet is to actually get online and find out about it, by reading what's been documented about it, and by trying it for yourself.
  2. All of the course work is completed online. Topics such as email, search engines, online chat, etc. aren't vague concepts in a book – they're skills you acquire by doing.
  3. All the assignment requirements are posted online. You read the assignment on the web page, and you complete it on your own schedule – as long as everything is completed by the end of the semester. You can work at your own pace and finish early if you like.
  4. All the assignments are turned in electronically through email and online forms.
  5. Communication is ongoing through email and chat sessions scheduled privately among those registered for the course.
  6. Class members will have an opportunity to introduce themselves via a short home page posted for this class. A public discussion forum is also available on this web site.
  7. Detailed grading criteria is available here.

This is our classroom – right in your browser window.
