CMSY129 Principles of the Internet
Hypermedia - RealPlayer

RealPlayer is a plug in that gives you an audio feed to everything being broadcast over the internet using that convention. There are thousands of provider networks that use RealPlayer to stream news, entertainment, sports, and business content over the web. Your computer becomes a virtual radio and TV that can connect to stations worldwide. Some record companies even provide entire album tracks to sample over the web. (You can't save those files, though - you can only listen to them live.) Realistically, it isn't the same sound quality you'd get from a CD, but it's an amazing and versatile extension to the otherwise silent web.

To listen to webcasting, radio, and live performances via the web, you'll need a sound card and speakers, and you'll need to download the RealPlayer from Progressive Networks: http://www.realaudio.com/hpproducts/player/index.html, which will allow you to stream RealAudio and RealVideo files right on your desktop.

Sites to view once you have the RealPlayer on your computer:
